Takehomes A. M - Players Skills and Concepts
Takehomes P.M. - Participants' Beliefs and Growth
The Handout to the Class
The participants were told that we would be dealing with what they had learned that would 1) help them to become a better coach and 2) help them to become a better learner and creator of their own future lives and careers and learning to learn with other people.
Morning Topics - To Become a Better Coach
This discussion began with and continued with a great amount of energy and interaction. Ollie, a football coach, commented on Lester’s scenario on an intercepted pass dealing with teamwork and responsibility. Judy, a volleyball coach, agreed with them and added some positive thoughts. Paula, a softball coach, really liked our Players’ Rights and Responsibilities chart and said she would use it in her opening practice next year.
Bessie, another softball coach, liked the way we handled a player’s mistake; making it into a mutual learning experience. She quoted our statement, “A mistake is a signal from your player to you that this is a place where she can be helped.”
Reinforcement rather than Repetition was mentioned by several people to be insightful and usable. The Goal Setting session was considered to be clarifying. Commenting on the session, Communication with Players, was dealt with in a similar fashion.
Some students express an interest in the seating arrangement and their involvement in the presentation. We gave them a short lesson on Student-lead Learning and Player-lead Coaching.
The scenario on Closure was received with a lot of headnodding and the session was appropriately terminated.
Afternoon Topics - To Become a Better Learner and Creator of our own Future Lives and Careers.
We dealt in some depth and a lot of interest in two areas of thought and feelings. Both of which invoked a lot of wisdom and caring.
First Area: As a coach, what do I believe and what do I do within those beliefs?
What did I find here about myself and what I do with my players?
What did I find that will enable me to become a better coach for my players?
What did I find that will enable me to deal with what I believe about winning and losing?
What did I learn about learning with others?
Second Area: Who am I? Who do I want to be?
What did I find here?
What did I find that I do as a coach, as a learner, as a person?
What am I taking with me from here?
What are my Wishes, my Wings?
Course Closure
High fives, hand shakes, hugs, wishes, appreciations, promises, and all forms of joy. And maybe some “I’m glad this is over.”?
No, that couldn’t be.
A Note from the Past to the Present
This is the end of my wishing of my Past to the realities of my Present. I have looked at what I may have done in the past with the thousands of students in my classes and the readers of my books. They were mainly future and present teachers and coaches. I hope we all grew together, with our own unique perceptions and our seeking, creative minds.
