College Football Team Practice
The Handout to the Class
The thoughts of the creators of this course was that the students must have personal activities that have them involved in the process of learning and interaction with their classmates. These experiences were to be utilized in the later sessions.
Morning Session #9
Activity: Field Trip to the Football Field
The class today began at the college football field to watch a varsity football team practice. They were to observe what all of the different people; Coaches, Players, Staff do and how they do it. They were allowed to interview these people. This experience will be the topic of discussion during today’s afternoon session.
Instructor’s Notes on Class Session
The students were given the rest of the morning session to edit and organize their notes taken at this morning’s activity.
Afternoon Session #10 / Instructor’s Notes on Class Session
This session was the best so far - it reflected the students’ interest, delight (?), with the activity they experienced this morning. The discussion focused on thoughts and feelings in the psychological concepts, e.g, teamwork, questioning strategies, and drill, that were observed. The majority of comments were positive and there were a few that questioned what they saw.
The instructor noted that the discussion was more of the Student-centered Learning model than the Lecture or Q and A models. The amount of commenting and interaction was noted and acknowledged.
There was a lot of sharing of their own coaching techniques, experiences, and beliefs. Story telling was sufficiently present and one student presented a scenario dealing with teamwork.
